Puppy Top Training Tips - Leash Walking

Place a collar or a harness on your puppy and allow them time to get used to it. Fasten it tight enough so that your puppy cannot pull it over their head. Adjust it as they grow though!

Clip your puppy's lead to the collar or harness. Remember: NEVER attach the lead to an ADAPTIL Junior Collar, as it has not been designed for that use.

Ideally avoid long line or flexi leads and use a 1.5m (4-6 ft) clip lead instead. Any long lines or flexi leads will encourage pulling habits.

Gently encourage your puppy to follow you, using praise. If your puppy struggles, hold the lead for a while, then gently coax them to move forward again.

Start your sessions in a quiet place with minimal distractions and use tasty treats (like sausage, cheese, chicken etc).

Whenever the lead is loose with no tension, reward your puppy.

If your puppy pulls and the lead goes tight, stand still. Keep hold of the lead at all times. If your puppy comes in and the lead becomes loose again, reward them. Don’t throw food, make sure your puppy takes it from your hand.

Repeat short sessions as often as possible.
